Sen. John McCain lauded President Barack Obama on Thursday for imposing sanctions on Russia, calling the move against the country for its alleged involvement in hacking the Democratic National Committee “long overdue.”
Reported by Western Journalism:
The Arizona Republican, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued a joint statement with North Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, arguing that Russia deserves to get hit with Obama’s sanctions.
“The retaliatory measures announced by the Obama Administration today are long overdue. But ultimately, they are a small price for Russia to pay for its brazen attack on American democracy,” the statement reads. “We intend to lead the effort in the new Congress to impose stronger sanctions on Russia.”
Sen. McCain joins top senators from both parties who are pledging to push additional sanctions against Russia next year.
Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, vowed Thursday to introduce “comprehensive enhanced sanctions” over Russia’s meddling in the U.S. election in January.
