With only weeks left in office for the country’s worst chief executive since Jimmy Carter, President Obama moved Wednesday to seal off up to 1.6 million acres of land in the western United States to prevent the kind of oil and gas exploration the country needs if it’s ever going to be truly energy independent.
But Republicans aren’t letting Obama’s last-ditch land grab happen without a fight – even if that means the incoming Trump administration will have to get in on the action.
While Obama was gambling away his Christmas vacation in the lovely Hawaiian Islands, his administration announced that 1.35 million acres in Utah and 300,000 acres in Nevada would be henceforth designated “national monuments” to keep grubby human activities from interfering with the wonders of nature.
“Today, I am designating two new national monuments in the desert landscapes of southeastern Utah and southern Nevada to protect some of our country’s most important cultural treasures, including abundant rock art, archaeological sites and lands considered sacred by Native American tribes,” Obama said in a statement, according to the Washington Times. “Today’s actions will help protect this cultural legacy and will ensure that future generations are able to enjoy and appreciate these scenic and historic landscapes.”
Yeah, well that might sound like a great idea to the academic “conservationists” in Washington, but the people who actually live in those states have a considerably different idea about how the land should be used.
And they don’t appreciate the Caesar-like dictates from a vacationing chief executive halfway across the Pacific effectively shutting down a huge part of the country to any economic development.
Obama was allegedly acting on his powers under the Antiquities Act, the Theodore Roosevelt-era law that gives presidents sweeping authority to protect lands of “historic or scientific” interest.
Being Obama, though, he’s abused the powers considerably. Even before the announcement this week, he’d declared more lands in the United States to be off limits for oil production than any of his predecessors.
