Serving the Country is honorable, yet could easily lead innocent decent people down the path of corruption. Representatives are voted into a position of power, they are wined and dined. They live and are treated as kings. They are frequently in situations where they are being influenced one way or the other. Many politicians have been seduced into corruption and criminal activity. At least 20 notable politicians have been arrested, indicted or convicted since 2000. The charges have ranged from deprivation of honest services to fraud, bribery, racketeering, mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.
The most recent arrest and conviction was a former Pennsylvania Congressman Chaka Fattah, who was convicted and sentenced to 10 years for numerous charges, including bribery, racketeering, money laundering and several types of fraud.
After hearing his sentence, Fattah stood and addressed the judge, saying, “The investigation and the trial has been the most disappointing event in my now 60-year life. I’ve helped tens of millions of people and that has nothing to do with the fact that I have been found on the wrong side of these questions by a jury.”
What is your opinion? Is Criminal Activity Widespread in Politics?
