CBS News Investigative Unit Senior Producer Pat Milton was told by authorities:
The suspect yelled “Allah-u Akbar” during the stabbing, and witnesses confirmed this report.
Police claim 20-year-old Wasil Farooqui of Roanoke County stabbed a man and woman in a random attack that left both victims severly wounded and hospitalized.
According to reports, Farooqui told authorities he had been hearing voices telling him that he was stupid and needed to attack. He claims he left his home “to clear his head” and grabbed a butcher knife from his kitchen on the way out. Shortly thereafter he arrived at The Pines apartments, where the attack took place.
Farooqui claims he didn’t know the victims or why he attacked them. He simply saw them walking from the pool area and went after them.
The victims were attacked just before 8 p.m. and the attacker ultimately fled the scene. While officers were at the hospital, a male came into the emergency room with injuries of his own, and was later matched to the description of the suspect.
Further investigation led to his arrest for the crime.
A law enforcement source confirmed the FBI is investigating whether the knife attack was possible inspired by ISIS. So far, the terror group has not claimed the attack. Still, Farooqui has been on the FBI’s radar for some time and is believed to be self-radicalized.
