British Prime Minister Theresa May is prepared to use nuclear weapons in a first strike attack, her defense secretary Michael Fallon warned.
May’s defense secretary, Michael Fallon, issued a dire warning to Britain’s enemies on the “Today” program on BBC Radio 4. You can listen here.
He didn’t specify what would warrant a nuclear strike; instead, he — rightly — told the listening audience that the nuclear weapons don’t serve as very good deterrence if the enemy knows exactly what to avoid. That would defeat the whole purpose.
“In the most extreme circumstances, we’ve made it very clear that you can’t rule out the use of nuclear weapons as a first strike,” Fallon said when asked what circumstances would warrant the use of nuclear weapons by the United Kingdom.
He explained that specifying the circumstances that would warrant a first strike would be a grave mistake.
“They are better not specified or described, which would only give comfort to our enemies and make the deterrent less credible,” he said. “The whole point about the deterrent is you’ve got to leave uncertainty in the mind of anybody who might be thinking of using weapons against this country.”
